I Really Should Take Down the Tree

I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.

~Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Sitting in the semi-dark

staring at the shorter-than-life

Christmas tree in the corner

(blocking the door to the balcony, useless in this season).

The multicolored lights

warm the room almost as much

as the open candle flame

on the coffee table,

tucked in amongst books,

journals, and photo albums,

awaiting someone to wander through their pages.

I really should take down the tree

since it offers constant temptation to the cat

and it’s already January

but I simply can’t bring myself

to sacrifice the promise within

its branches.

How many seasons of my life

have I loved to sit like this

alone

in the semi-dark

dreaming of sugar plums and claymation movies and being told

“Yes, Virginia”?

No matter how many Christmastimes I live to see,

I will never be tired of the magic

in the tinsel and lights

of the tree.
