We Will Trust God

By Sue Tornai

I lift up my eyes to the mountains — where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

~Psalm 121:1-2

Wrapped in each other’s arms, we wept in a crowded pharmacy. John and I had been together through his major surgeries — prostate cancer, bleeding colon, hernia and broken ankle. But now, after nineteen years, his cancer was back. We met with the oncologist, and he prescribed the latest, greatest cancer-fighting drug. When the pharmacy clerk quoted the price for one month, we thought there must be a mistake. She checked. There was no mistake. John and I looked at each other.

“But what if the medicine makes John sick after the first pill? What if it doesn’t work?” I asked, and received a blank look.

“Do you have a sample size prescription?” I asked.

“This is what your doctor prescribed,” she said.

We went back to the doctor’s office, and he prescribed a smaller amount. When we returned to the pharmacy, we discovered it would be more cost-efficient to buy the full amount for a month. The bill was $1,956.77.

We walked together to the parking lot.

“I’m not worth it,” John said.

Tears filled my eyes. I remembered a time in my life when I had said, “I’m not worth it,” thinking God’s forgiveness couldn’t possibly cover all my sin. I was wrong, and so was John. God showed me how much He loved me, and He became a faithful friend.

“We will trust God,” I said. “Let’s watch and see what He does.” I don’t know where the words came from, but I knew this was God’s opportunity. Who else could we turn to?

So far, the medication has not been effective against the cancer, but thankfully John is not in pain. He maintains his sense of humor and keeps busy with his projects in the garage. He lives every day as if it’s his last. Each day with him is sweeter than the day before.

Although we have not traveled this road before, we are clinging to our faith to get us through. “I lift up my eyes to the mountains — where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2).
