About the Author

Suzanne Koven is a physician and writer in Boston. For over twenty years she has practiced primary care internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. Her clinical interests include weight and stress management, women’s health, and mind-body medicine. She writes the monthly column “In Practice” for The Boston Globe, where she also regularly contributes essays and reviews. Her weekly blog, “In Practice,” appears at boston.com/health. Her work has also been published in Psychology Today and elsewhere.

A frequent public speaker, Suzanne has addressed health professionals and lay audiences on diverse topics including menopause, work-life balance, nutrition, exercise, end-of-life care, and — her passion — the role of narrative or storytelling in medicine.

Suzanne was born and raised in New York City. She received her B.A. in English literature from Yale, and her M.D. from Johns Hopkins. She also holds an MFA in nonfiction from Bennington. After completing her medical training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, she moved to the Boston area where she now lives with her husband and — when they’re home — three grown children. When she’s not writing or taking care of patients, Suzanne loves to read and travel. She tries to practice the healthy lifestyle she preaches, and appreciates that her patients continually remind her how rewarding that endeavor can be.
