From Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul

Who Is Tom Lagana?

Tom Lagana is a professional speaker, author and engineer. He is a 1994 recipient of the Jefferson Award for Outstanding Public Service and a member of the International Federation of Speaking Professionals. With thirty-five years of experience in the corporate world, Tom works with successful teams throughout North America, Europe and the Far East.

As a professional engineer, Tom made periodic technical presentations. Recognizing the need to improve his public speaking skills, Tom turned to Toastmasters International. In 1992, two inmates inspired Tom to form a prison group, and seven years later the national award-winning Walking Tall Club continues to flourish.

While working on a special project for the warden in 1997, Tom visited a bookstore in search of motivational resources for the inmates to read. After seeing books similar to the Chicken Soup for the Soul series he began his own book of touching stories for inmates.

Months later, while attending Jack Canfield’s Facilitation Skills Seminar in Santa Barbara, California, Tom mentioned his book to Jack Canfield. Jack replied that he and Mark Victor Hansen wanted a Chicken Soup for the Prisoner’s Soul book but lacked someone to spearhead the project. Tom immediately volunteered.

For nearly three years, Tom collected and wrote prison-related stories. He continues to write to inmates and their loved ones, as well as prison staff, volunteers, and victims.

Tom presents Success Skills Seminars to inmates, prison staff and corporate clients. He has been happily married to Laura for more than thirty years. They have two grown sons and a grandchild.
