From Chicken Soup for the Soul: Thanks to My Mom

Top-Priority Delivery

A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.

~Agatha Christie

As an aircrewman in the Navy, I made numerous trips from Norfolk, Virginia to the Caribbean. Homestead Air Force Base in Florida was a good place to stop for gas. It was even better since my mom lived nearby and would meet us at the terminal for a short visit, bringing a tin of chocolate chip cookies. The crew got to know my mom as adventurous and full of surprises.

On one occasion there was a security situation and we couldn’t leave the airplane. There would be no visit and no cookies. I heard the pilot yell as he laughed. “Hey Schaf, what’d your mom do now?” I looked out and saw a K-9 security car pull up. In the back seat, behind the dog’s cage, was my mom. She got out of the car with the security guard, who was carrying a tin of cookies. I met them at the back of the airplane as the crew watched. She hugged me and the guard handed me the tin. They got back in the car, and laughing, they left.

Somehow with her charm and determination, she convinced the guard the tin was a high-priority delivery. Maybe she slipped him a few cookies. Much to the delight of the entire crew, the cookies didn’t make it to where we were going. They never did. I would always get off the plane with an empty tin, a smile and another fond memory of mom.

To my brother Bob: if you ever read this, “Nanner, nanner, I got cookies, and you didn’t.”
