Time to Share

If you have a candle, the light won’t glow any dimmer if I light yours off of mine.

~Steven Tyler

One day while I was sitting

Feeling sorry for myself,

I started listing my laments;

Took my pen down from the shelf…

“My stringy hair so needs a perm

My clothes are old and worn;

No money to go shopping with,

I’m lonely, bored, forlorn.

No close friends to visit with

To share some times of fun,

My days are filled with dull routine

From dawn to setting sun.”

But then God pricked my heart with shame

And made me think again;

He gave me something new to write

And words flowed from my pen…

“The cancer patient has no hair

And would gladly welcome yours;

Your clothes would warm the homeless one

Whose rags are thin and torn.

The money you’d go shopping with

The truly poor could use;

Would you share your wealth, my child

Or spend it as you choose?

The daily chores I’ve given you

Are blessings sweet and rare;

The paralyzed would love your work

And count each day as fair.

There are lonely people everywhere

Waiting for a friend.

They too, are bored and need some fun,

They’re just around the bend.”

And now I see things differently

I’m rich beyond compare!

I’ve got to run, there’s someone near

…Who needs to know I care.
