From Chicken Soup for the Soul: Best Mom Ever!

Two in One

She has to have four arms, four legs, four eyes, two hearts, and double the love. There is nothing single about a single mom.

~Mandy Hale

My mother and I have always been close. I like to think that our mother-daughter relationship has always been different from others. My father died of a drug overdose when I was three and my mother also became the father figure in my life.

Shortly after my father passed away my mother lost her job. She didn’t know what to do. She decided to enroll in grad school. It was a struggle for her. She didn’t have a job, she had to pay her tuition, and she was taking care of her young daughter (me).

Fast-forward six years. My mother earned a master’s degree in psychology. She’s currently working at a summer camp for children who have selective mutism, and yet somehow she still manages to make time for me. We joke around, play games, even binge-watch Downton Abbey. She’s more than just a mom — she’s a mom, a dad, a supporter, and a best friend, all in one.

My mom is the most inspiring woman I have ever met. She does everything. She goes above and beyond. My mom is the best mom and the best dad ever.
