73: Lady Pamela

From Chicken Soup for the Soul: Best Mom Ever!

Lady Pamela

Families don’t have to match. You don’t have to look like someone else to love them.

~Leigh Anne Tuohy

I always tell people I have four mothers. My biological mother, my stepmother, my mother-in-law, and then there’s Lady Pamela. I met Pam in ninth grade; she was my French teacher. I loved her immediately because she could make anyone laugh at any time, no matter the circumstances.

Our particular relationship strengthened after my mother left soon after I turned fifteen, and Pam’s husband of over twenty years succumbed to cancer. We saw each other through these very difficult times. One of the most amazing things to me was that although Pam stayed out of school to grieve for a few months, when she came back, she was still able to bring laughter to those around her. I knew then that I would always love this woman. I stayed in her French classes through all four years of high school, and continued to visit her during my five years in the military. I’d become a single mom to my beautiful daughter, Sarah, during my time in the service, and she became known as Grammie Pammie from then on.

After I got out of the service, I moved back to our hometown where I met, fell in love with, and married my husband. Pam offered her home to us for the wedding. Our wedding was in her backyard, which happened to be by a beautiful lake. A few months later, she offered her home to us again to have our baby shower for our daughter, Lily.

Pam has been retired from teaching for a number of years now, and spends her time traveling the world, writing memoirs about her life, and attending conferences for the original Pan Am flight attendants. She may have taught French for years, but that is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to who this woman is, the students’ lives she touched, the friends she made, and the two adopted granddaughters she has through us. Thank you, Lady Pamela, for being my friend, my confidante, and my personal hero.
