The Aware Train

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.

~Steve Jobs

I was at a crossroads in my life, trying to create my next career move. I was living in Los Angeles and working freelance in television production, but I knew I was missing a sense of purpose in my life. So I started taking classes on developing my intuition and visualization practices to explore what I felt was missing. During this time, I started to have a recurring dream.

My dream was of a train, a silver streamlined train with rounded corners, a symbol of the future. The train seemed to be traveling very slowly and was so long that I couldn’t see the end. I had a very strong sense that the train was coming from somewhere eternal and going somewhere eternal, like a kind of spirit train.

I would jump on the train, and inside were not the typical rows of seats and an aisle, but something that looked like a television control room with television monitors and audio boards. This was very high-tech audio equipment that appeared to be monitoring a television or radio network.

Operating the controls were visionary leaders, doctors, scientists and new thought leaders. They were all sitting in high-backed black swivel chairs, but it was what they were doing in their chairs that was the essence of the dream. They were spinning around and swiveling in these chairs like little kids, and they were laughing and giggling and having a great time. They were emitting a sense of total playful joy and having so much fun that it didn’t seem like work at all. Then I would step off the train, and I always remember seeing on the side of the train the word “Aware.”

One day, I awoke suddenly from this dream and said the words, “You’re supposed to do it.” Do what? I thought. Where did those words come from? And what am I supposed to do? Later that day, a friend called to tell me of a Los Angeles radio station that had been sold to a Korean company, and the drive-time hosts were leaving to find new jobs. This left an opening in the middle of the afternoon at the radio station.

I went in to the station and asked if I could host my own show. I started broadcasting a show interviewing some of the mentors in my life who were doing amazing things, like my acupuncturist who came from a 5,000-year-old lineage of Chinese medicine. I also interviewed my teachers from the intuition classes and doctors who were increasing longevity by eating apricot pits in the Hunza Valley. I called my radio show “Aware” because of my dream. Fifteen years later, I still broadcast “The Aware Show” to more than three million people globally per month.

I feel the significance of my train dream was to teach me to follow my dreams and listen to my intuition. The visionary leaders in the high back swivel chairs were the guests and experts I interview about how to create a life of joy, good health, and happiness. I talk about how to follow our dreams and listen to our own truth. And I invite people to stay “Aware” at the end of each show, just as my dreams invited me.
