A Clear Connection

There is no surprise more magical than the surprise of being loved. It is God’s finger on man’s shoulder.

~Charles Morgan

My wife and I dated in high school, then went our separate ways. Several years later, we reconnected with some help. What God gave Theresa and me, in my view, was a very clear message — a message that we both understood and trusted.

Theresa and I both grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. She attended an all-girls Catholic high school, Mercy Academy. I attended an all-boys Catholic high school, St. Xavier. Theresa became friends with my older sister, who also attended Mercy. Several weeks after we met, I got up the nerve to call Theresa on the phone and ask her out on a date. We were both in our junior year of high school. We continued to date and became very close over the next two years.

We discovered that we had similar core values and morals. Our strengths and weaknesses were such that we could tackle just about any project together. We were an example of “opposites attract” in the best possible way. We complemented each other. Completed each other. Everyone told us that we were destined to be married to each other. But we were still very young.

After high school, I started at the J.B. Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville, which also meant alternating semesters in Middletown, Ohio during my last two years. Theresa began taking classes at Jefferson Community and Technical College in Louisville and then transferred to Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. We went our separate ways and started dating other people, but we still kept in touch.

Sometime during my junior year of college, I started hearing a kind, gentle voice in my head. It kept saying, “You are going to marry Theresa.” I found myself getting into these mental conversations. How can I possibly marry Theresa? We are not seeing each other. She is dating some guy who keeps asking me to help him fix his Ford Pinto, and I have been seeing a young lady in Ohio and another in Louisville. But I kept hearing that voice. “You are going to marry Theresa.” I prayed and thought about it, wondering why I was feeling like this.

Finally, one night, about four months since I had talked to or seen Theresa, I heard it again: “You are going to marry Theresa.” I thought to myself, Okay, I give up. I will call her up and talk to her. I wasn’t even sure if she was in town.

So I picked up the old rotary phone in my parents’ kitchen to call Theresa, but I did not hear a dial tone. You see, I had picked up the phone at that split second between when an incoming call is connected and the phone actually rings. It was Theresa on the phone.

It seems she had been hearing a similar nudging voice for some time and decided to call me at the exact same time I had decided to call her!

Six months later, we were engaged. A year after that, we both finished college and got married. God had a plan for us and I am so happy we both said, “Yes.”
