Ask the Universe for Help…

Be careful what you wish for; you may get it.

~W.W. Jacobs

Money was painfully tight. My husband had been unemployed for months, my meager salary had been frozen for years, and our rent had just gone up. I’d applied for dozens of part-time retail positions for the holiday season, hoping I could somehow fit one in around my full-time job as a magazine editor, but I hadn’t received any responses.

In addition to my day job, I’m also an author. I write picture books for children, but it had been years since I’d sold a new book. One of my publishers had gone out of business, another was teetering on the verge of bankruptcy, and a third told me bluntly that they weren’t accepting new submissions. Meanwhile, I had a stack of finished manuscripts that was growing in tandem with a pile of rejection letters. I had to sell more books to get more money flowing in.

Around that time, I read an article about how one man improved his life by changing his password to a mantra — something that he wanted to remind himself about multiple times per day; something that would make his life better; something that he was asking the universe for help in achieving. It seemed like it was worth a try.

I changed my password to SellMoreBook$. Several times each day, I typed SellMoreBook$ into my computer. I hoped the universe was listening.

The universe, it seems, has a sense of humour. Within a week of changing my password, I got a part-time job for the holiday season — as a salesperson in a busy bookstore.
