Something Powerful Happened

It is reasonable to expect the doctor to recognize that science may not have all the answers to problems of health and healing.

~Norman Cousins

My sister had undergone a hip replacement, and I had returned to our hometown to help her during her first few days of recovery. We sisters reminisced and laughed that first night, sharing childhood memories. As we talked, I noticed that Dorothy was continually rubbing her leg. When I asked her about it, she replied, “I’m worried about the circulation.”

I felt her leg and gasped. The leg was so swollen that it felt as hard as wood. Now we were both concerned.

Later, as I got ready for bed, I knelt to pray for Dorothy. “Please, Heavenly Father, if there is anything I can do for my sister, please show me.”

Earlier, when I had spotted a Chicken Soup for the Soul book, I set it at my bedside to read. I read randomly, and as I read through the fourth story — a story about healing — I was overcome with a warm sensation in my chest. And then God used the story to show me how to help my sister.

I felt apprehension the next morning. What if Dorothy thought I was just being weird and wouldn’t let me help her? Tentatively, I told her about reading the story and God’s directions to me. I stumbled and stammered through my explanation, telling her, “I don’t have a clue what I’m doing.”

She didn’t ridicule me, nor look at me as though I’d soon be admitted to a psych ward. She merely smiled and said, “Let’s try, Ellie.”

I’d never been so grateful for my sister’s easygoing attitude as I was at that moment. She trusted me and appeared to have more confidence about where we were going than I did. I was filled with a mixture of exhilaration and trepidation.

I rubbed my hands together vigorously for some fifteen seconds, and then held them an inch above my sister’s injured leg. Slowly, I moved my hands back and forth, barely above her leg. Suddenly, I opened my mouth in shock, wanting to describe what I felt — yet I was momentarily speechless. Then, with a half-laugh, yet in absolute awe, I asked, “Oh Dorothy, can you feel that?”

By now, a magnificent energy was pulsing back and forth between my hands and her leg.

I looked up at my sister, wanting her to feel the same thing. At first, she indicated she could feel nothing. But within seconds her eyes lit up, and she said, “Ellie, it is so powerful, I expect to see sparks!”

We were both experiencing the same phenomenon. I was in awe! I continued to move my hands up and down the swollen leg while experiencing the incredible, pulsing energy.

Strangely, we didn’t discuss what had taken place when I was finished. Perhaps it was because we were both so astounded by the entire event.

Later that evening, a friend of Dorothy’s arrived at her house. The woman was in pain, having just had a biopsy done on her neck. Dorothy said, “Oh, let Ellie do this hand thing on you!”

I experienced mixed feelings about this. Was this all right with God? Would the energy still be there? Was I supposed to do this for others? I said a silent prayer and repeated what I had done for my sister, moving my hands over her friend’s neck, yet not touching it. She later told my sister the amazing result: The pain disappeared!

Eighteen months later, I decided to write an account of the event that had taken place that day at my sister’s. I wondered if the energy had really taken away her pain. As I wrote, I realized I needed my sister’s feelings and impressions of that day, so I phoned her.

“Dorothy, please tell me what you felt that day.”

She was quiet, yet I felt her reverence even over the phone. Her voice changed as she relived the moments. “Oh, Ellie, it seemed like there was something over the top of me, above me. It was very powerful, and I experienced such a feeling of love. The pain just seemed to dissolve.”
