Chocolate Comfort

By Sally Walls

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

~John 8:12

On a warm June evening, our lives were devastated by tragedy. Our eighteen-year-old son was killed cycling home from work in a bicycle-traffic accident. It happened several days after his high-school graduation, when plans and dreams for his life had seemed limitless. We asked ourselves, “Will we survive without him?”

An African proverb says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” It also takes a village to bury a child. God, in His abundant faithfulness and mercy, surrounded us with caring community. We came to understand that He uses people to be His hands and feet.

Returning home from a road trip, I was overcome with sorrow. Our once-happy home had become a place of grieving; the walls cried out for Davis. His warm hugs and bright smile wouldn’t be there to greet me, and I dreaded stepping inside.

Upon arrival, we noticed a brightly decorated box on our doorstep. We discovered freshly baked chocolate-chip cookies inside, still warm. Tucked alongside the cookies was a heartfelt note of encouragement from friends. With a cookie in each hand, I sat on my kitchen floor and wept. I was overcome with a sense of gratitude. God had provided a very tangible gift of love through their thoughtful gesture. We found such comfort in those cookies.

Nothing can diminish the enormity of our loss. It cuts like a knife. But we soon realized after Davis’s passing that it was the small acts of kindness from others that helped us reclaim joy in our brokenness. Blessings come through giving. When we stop giving, we stop loving.

I now bake cookies to comfort those with heavy hearts. I appreciate that God wants to use my hands to share the joy of His love with others — even love in a chocolate-chip cookie.
