Two Dreams Realized

One of the most poignant moments in Masters history came in 1992, when Fred Couples won the tournament—his first major championship.

After he signed his scorecard, tournament officials brought him to the CBS studio in Butler Cabin, where he would be interviewed by Jim Nantz and awarded the Green Jacket by the 1991 winner, Ian Woosnam.

What made the moment so special was that Nantz and Couples had been through this many times before in mock interviews. As suitemates at University of Houston, Nantz—who dreamed of covering the Masters for CBS—would “interview” Couples—who dreamed of winning the Masters one day.

After CBS went off the air, Couples and Nantz embraced, both with tears in their eyes.

“The thing that is so amazing is that all those years ago, we always knew it was going to be the Masters that Fred would win,” Nantz said.
