The Guarantee

You will find that you survive humiliation And that’s an experience of incalculable value.

~T.S. Eliot

Nervously walking through the lunchroom,
I glance side to side for my middle school crush.
Spotting him quickly, my eyes move to zoom,
My frightened cheeks fidget and I start to blush.

I walk past the table of this cute boy,
Turning my head in the faintest of ways.
My feet slightly quicken as if to destroy,
My limited journey through this school maze.

My right foot slides backwards,
The left foot unstable,
My sandal flies toward,
My crush’s lunch table.

Lying on the ground, unable to move,
I look up at the boys, who are laughing at me.
Pull myself up, reach into the groove,
Go under the table, I’m shocked to see.

The sandal is next to my crush’s blue sneaker.
I quickly grab it and then run away.
My life couldn’t possibly seem any bleaker.
Not a good start for my very first day.

I sit by my locker, frozen in grief,
With tears rolling down, I wish they would stop.
A girl walks by and I see with relief,
A long train of tissue stuck to her flip-flop.

I’m not the only one with a shoe mishap.
At least I’m not the only one who had to be
The only student caught in this embarrassing trap.
It happens to all, it’s a guarantee.
