Role Model

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it.
~Proverbs 22:6

They say that babies are gifts from above. I believe that mothers are gifts from above also. Mothers are gifts of love, happiness, joy, encouragement, care and support. We do not get to choose our mothers or the families that we are born into, but our mothers choose how they care for us. I am fortunate to have a mother who is everything a kid could hope for.

My mom had me while she was a sophomore student away at college in Nashville, Tennessee. She could have dropped out of school and returned home to New York City where her family was, but she did not. She once told me that I was her inspiration and motivation to finish what she had started. My mom remained a full-time student and worked part-time in order to support me while earning her degree. When I was an infant, she often took me to class with her until I was old enough to attend daycare. For her determination to be a successful role model just for me, I am thankful.

Each and every day I wonder what it would be like without my mom. Would life turn into misery? That question was answered for me one summer day. This was the day when my mom went into labor with my sister, Alexus. I was so excited that day! But the delivery went wrong and my sister passed away. I could have lost my mom as well and this forced me to take an in-depth look at what she meant to my life.

Shortly after my sister’s death, my parents separated. This was even harder for me to deal with. Although I was only four years old when it happened, I remember the day as if it was yesterday. The break-up of my family was hard on me and I blamed my sister. If only she had lived, we would be one big happy family.

Although my parents separated, they continue to work together to make sure that they support me. My mom continues to provide for my personal wants and needs. She maintains a good relationship with my dad just for me. This experience is what encourages me not to take my mom for granted. This is why I am thankful for her.

Mom, through thick and thin, you are one of my best friends. You encourage me to follow my dreams and you teach me life lessons through your actions and experiences. Mom, I thank you for inspiring me to follow the right path in life and for helping me make the right choices and exposing me to incredible adventures.

I never realized how much you meant to me until I sat down to write this story.

I want you to know that I will always love you. I only hope that when I grow up I can be as good a parent to my children as you have been to me.
