Blink 182 had just had success with our album Enema of the State. It sold something like 10 million records all over the world. We became known as a silly, summertime-y, punk rock, punk punk band. We were getting ready to go into the studio and decided that we wanted to stretch our legs, grow, mature a bit as artists. We wanted to try something new.

About three weeks or a month later, we were writing and demo’ing and thought we finished the entire record and we were feeling good about it. Our manager came into the studio and we very proudly played it for him. His only comment was, “I don’t hear any catchy, summertime-y Blink 182 songs.” Tom (DeLonge) and I got really upset, although now we realize it was great.

I went home very angry. I went to the guest room, which was an office then, and I had decided I’d just lose everything from my head and write the catchiest, simple punk song. I was trying to think of the things that happen every summertime, like the Warped Tour, the first girlfriend of the summer, that evoke memories of summer for me. I approached it like an early Beach Boys song — a fun, catchy summertime tune. It turned into a great song, “The Rock Show.” It was the first single from the CD and became a big hit for us. Tom went home and did the same thing. His result was “First Date,” which was also a huge hit off the record.

There was a cool thing I learned from this — you have to get out of your own way. You have to always be who you are and grow naturally.

“The Rock Show”

Hanging out behind the club on the weekend

Acting stupid, getting drunk with my best friends.

I couldn’t wait for the summer and the Warped Tour.

I remember it’s the first time that I saw her — there.

She’s getting kicked out of school ’cause she’s failing.

I’m kinda nervous, ’cause I think all her friends hate me.

She’s the one, she’ll always be there.

She took my hand, and I admit it I swear

Because I fell in love with the girl at the rock show.

She said “What?” and I told her that I didn’t know.

She’s so cool, gonna sneak in through her window.

Everything’s better when she’s around.

I can’t wait till her parents go out of town.

I fell in love with the girl at the rock show.

When we said we were gonna move to Vegas —

I remember the look her mother gave us.

17, without a purpose or direction

We don’t owe anyone a fucking explanation.

I fell in love with the girl at the rock show.

She said “What?” and I told her that I didn’t know.

She’s so cool, gonna sneak in through her window.

Everything’s better when she’s around.

I can’t wait till her parents go out of town.

I fell in love with the girl at the rock show.

Black and white picture of her on my wall

I waited for her call, she always kept me waiting.

And if I ever got another chance, I’d still ask her to dance

Because she kept me waiting.

I fell in love with the girl at the rock show.

She said “What?” and I told her that I didn’t know.

She’s so cool, gonna sneak in through her window.

Everything’s better when she’s around.

I can’t wait till her parents go out of town.

I fell in love with the girl at the rock show.

With the girl at the rock show

With the girl at the rock show

(I’ll never forget tonight)

With the girl at the rock show……
