“Feels Like The First Time” is the first song I’d ever written completely by myself for me with my own band in mind — before I founded Foreigner. In hindsight, I’ve wondered if perhaps it was a premonition. I had experience writing before that, but always for or with other artists, particularly in France, where I lived.

I was 29 or 30 and barely surviving in New York, getting by day to day, wondering what would happen with my career. I was questioning whether I had the talent to continue or if I should get a “real job.”

I was in my living room and this song came out of thin air. I thought it was a breakthrough for me. I finished it in a day or two. It gave me the confidence in myself to go on and over the next two months I formed Foreigner.

It is an absolute that if you can get an idea, the song shows you the way. A phrase is the most natural beginning and usually leads to the song that you don’t have to labor over.

This was Foreigner’s first single, in 1977. It started the ball rolling.

“Feels Like The First Time”

I would climb any mountain

Sail across a stormy sea

If that’s what it takes me baby

To show you how much you mean to me

And I guess it’s just the woman in you

That brings out the man in me.

I know I can’t help myself

You’re all in the world to me.

It feels like the first time

Feels like the very first time

It feels like the first time

It feels like the very first time.

I have waited a lifetime

Spent my time so foolishly

But now that I’ve found you

Together we’ll make history.

And I know that it must be the woman in you

That brings out the man in me

I know I can’t help myself

You’re all that my eyes can see.

And it feels like the first time

Like it never did before

Feels like the first time

Like we’ve opened up the door

Feels like the first time

Like it never will again, never again.

Feels like the first time, it feels like the first time

It feels like the very first time, very, very, it feels

It feels like the first time, oh it feels like the first time

It feels like the very first time.
