“Waiting For A Girl Like You,” like many other songs I’ve written, came fairly easily once I had the original idea for it. At the time, I was expecting the woman I was involved with to give birth to our daughter — we had Christopher.

I wrote about half of the song and then Lou Gramm, my writing partner at the time, worked with me and we had it finished in an hour or two. We both knew it was something very special.

That’s when I started to realize there was something spiritual about writing a song. It comes from somewhere above; you’re just the conduit. You have to be in a space where you can accept it. The minute I wrote it, I got full of melancholy. It had sort of a strange hold over me. It made me sad when I heard it. It was very powerful. When we recorded it, I had difficulty keeping it together. I had to leave a few times during the session.

While we were recording, a girl we’d never seen before wandered into the studio. She was beautiful. She stood against the wall and when Lou went into the vocal booth, he sang for her through the glass. When we turned around, she was gone. She was the inspiration for the vocal. He captured it with such emotion, and on one take.

So many people tell me how powerful this song was for them as well. Once it was completed, we played it for several couples, all of whom were in various stages of break-up. By the end of the night, they were all cuddling. It was always very mysterious and still is for me.

I met my wife in London as this song was being released. People thought it may have been about her.

“Waiting For A Girl Like You”

So long, I’ve been looking too hard, I’ve been waiting too long

Sometimes I don’t know what I will find, I only know it’s a matter of time.

When you love someone, when you love someone

It feels so right, so warm and true, I need to know if you feel it too.

Maybe I’m wrong, won’t you tell me if I’m coming on too strong?

This heart of mine has been hurt before, this time I wanna be sure.

I’ve been waiting for a girl like you to come into my life

I’ve been waiting for a girl like you, your loving will survive.

I’ve been waiting for someone new to make me feel alive,

Yeah, waiting for a girl like you to come into my life.

You’re so good, when we make love it’s understood

It’s more than a touch or a word can say

Only in dreams could it be this way

When you love someone, yeah, really love someone.

Now I know it’s right, from the moment I wake up till deep in the night

There’s nowhere on earth that I’d rather be than holding you tenderly.

I’ve been waiting for a girl like you to come into my life

I’ve been waiting for a girl like you, your loving will survive.

I’ve been waiting for someone new to make me feel alive,

Yeah, waiting for a girl like you to come into my life.

I’ve been waiting, waiting for you, ooh, I’ve been waiting,

I’ve been waiting.

(I’ve been waiting for a girl like you, I’ve been waiting)

Won’t you come into my life?
