Carole and I were having a conversation about our young husbands and how, as young women, we didn’t know how to get through the hard times that every relationship has. This song came out of that discussion and maintains that conversational tone.

Carole and I were trying to figure out how to “do a relationship.” If I had been older, I would have had more communication tools. The intimacy of the mood is what I love most about the song and I believe that’s what pulls the listener into it easily. Plus, it’s a love song that never uses the word “love.” I like that a lot.

After we wrote it, we were thinking of a title, and thought, “One more time for all the old times,” followed by “ooh, ooh, ooh,” or “ahh, ahh, ahh.” One of us said, “Midnight Blue.” It was the perfect fit for the overall feeling of the story, which takes place during the night, after the couple has a fight, and before the morning comes and they look at their relationship through fresh eyes. I am grateful that the song and its story of gentle yearning endures.
