I was in Nashville when I first got together with my producer, Frank Rogers. He was looking for another big drinking song like Charles Dubois. Ashley Gorley and I had written, called “Drinkin’ and Dialin’.” When we started our writing session, Chris, Ashley and I were talking about our young kids, who are about the same age. Our stories and experiences were so similar that this song was born. During our conversation, someone said, “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” and it rang true.

The song is about the most important things in my life — my three kids.

And when he drops her off at pre-school

She’s clinging to his leg

When we wrote that line, we all three said, “Yeah.”

Originally it was supposed to be a lullaby so I could tell my kids that I wrote it for them when they got older. I honestly thought it would be an album track not a single, however it was the second single from my album Learn To Live and became my second consecutive #1 single on the country charts, where it remained for three weeks.

The song really came out of the simplicity of everyday life. That’s how all great songs happen.
