Melvin:

My twin brother, Mervin, and I met my high school sweetheart through a friend when we were in the 11th grade. We flipped a coin outside her door to see who would stay. I won. It was love at first sight. Adrena’s angelic qualities inspired the following lyrics for “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love”:

Since I met you, I’ve begun to feel so strange

Every time I speak your name.

After graduation Mervin and I went to Cheyney University, the oldest black college in America. Adrena remained behind and took a job in the City of Pittsburgh. We had planned to wed after my senior year, but two weeks before our August 10th wedding date, I sent a telegram stating that I did not want to get married. College life and the civil unrest of the 1960’s had dramatically altered my perceptions of reality.

My fiancée returned all the wedding gifts, quit her job and moved to Chicago where she promptly found new employment. She lived with her grandma. Because the Bible she had given me contained her grandma’s address, I was able to track her down. Although her parents told her grandma not to let me see her, one weekend I took three Greyhound busses from Pennsylvania, where I was teaching, and arrived in Chicago at 5:30 AM. Her grandma told Adrena to follow her heart and see me. This wonderful woman had been in love with someone when she was younger and didn’t marry him and always regretted it.

Upon seeing each other we immediately decided to get married. After getting a license, we tied the knot in a makeshift chapel on the 17th floor of a skyscraper. The next weekend I returned and brought Adrena home with me. That was over forty years ago and we’ve been together ever since. This was a love song to her, telling her how I truly felt.

Mervin:

This song was originally written for Tammi Terrell, who was a good friend of my brother and me and Marvin Gaye. We met her when she had just gotten out of the hospital where she was treated for a brain tumor. We wanted to do something special for her.

Tommy Bell, whom I first met when I was in college, taught me a lot about playing music. One day I was fooling around with the key changes that this highly successful songwriter/producer had shown me, and I came up with the music to “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love.” We tried to get it to Tammy and Marvin but couldn’t get through the Motown ranks, so we tried to have Peaches and Herb record it but they didn’t like it.

Tommy was producing the Stylistics and (unbeknown to us) The Spinners at the time, but he didn’t like the original lyrics to the song so we had to go back and re-write them. The Spinners then recorded it and it became a hit.

“Could It Be I’m Falling In Love”

Since I met you I’ve begun to feel so strange

Every time I speak your name.

That’s funny, you say that you are so helpless too

That you don’t know what to do.

Each night I pray there will never come a day

When you up and take your love away.

Say you feel the same way too

And I wonder what it is I feel for you.

Could it be I’m falling in love [with you baby]?

Could it be I’m falling in love?

Could it be I’m falling in love?

With you, with you, with you, with you

I don’t need all those things that used to bring me joy

You make me such a happy boy

And honey, you’ll always be the only for me,

Meeting you was my destiny.

You can be sure I will never let you down

When you need me I’ll be around

And darling, you’ll always be the only one for me

Heaven made you specially.

Could it be I’m falling in love [with you baby]?

Could it be I’m falling in love?

Could it be I’m falling in love?

With you, with you, with you, with you

And darling you’ll always be the only for me

Heaven made you specially.

Could it be I’m falling in love [With you baby]?

Could it be I’m falling in love? [I wanna know now baby]

Could it be I’m falling in love?

With you, with you, with you, with you

I walk around with my heart in my hands hey,

Walk the street as long as I can baby.

I used to sing fa fa fa fa

But right now I feel so good I sing la la la la.

Once you get me up

Won’t let me down,

Just let this feeling carry me on,

Skip the beats with my heart girl.

Could it be I’m falling in love?

Could it be I’m falling in love?

Could it be I’m falling in love?

Could it be I’m falling in love?

Could it be I’m falling in love?
