What Will Always Be

God gave us memories that we might have roses in December.

~J.M. Barrie

Midsummer’s flowers fade with time
The petals turn to dust;
Just as hinges that now swing free
Will soon give way to rust.

And the picture we try so hard to preserve
In memory’s crowded store
Eventually dims in twilight’s mist
... And soon is there no more.

But ah, the joy and dreams still live!
Indeed, enhanced with time—
The senses reel with what once was
... What will always be mine.

So blow, winter winds; grow dark, oh sky!
What has been will live forever,
For what the heart binds to the soul
... No passing years can sever.
