Miracle in the Bushes

Peace is not the absence of affliction, but the presence of God.

Lost! Is there a more frightening word to a parent? Our two-year-old daughter, Alanna, was lost. We had gone out to eat in an unfamiliar area and now we couldn’t find her, no matter how hard my husband and I looked.

In the midst of my fear, I turned to prayer. “Please, dear Father, help us find our baby.”

The words stuck in my heart. “Father, we need thee as we’ve never needed thee before. Alanna is lost. We can’t find her on our own.” A sob caught in my throat.

Despite the noise and shouts and cries around me, I felt a measure of peace.

“All is well.”

Where had the words come from? The voice was quiet, but, at the same time, unmistakable.

Calm overtook me, and I started from the point where we had last seen Alanna. Once more, words appeared in my mind. “Look down.”

I did as instructed and looked down. There, among the bushes flanking the restaurant was Alanna, curled up and fast asleep.

Laughing, crying, I knelt and picked her up, holding her close.

Would I have seen Alanna in the darkness if I hadn’t looked down as the voice had directed me? I doubt it.

A miracle? To be sure.

Sometimes, when a voice comes from above, it helps to look down.
