From Chicken Soup for the Soul Daily Inspirations for Women

April 4

On my first trip to Alaska, I met Mike. He had been a full-time student at the University of California in Riverside when he was struck by a car. The accident left him a double amputee. His parents had taken him on the cruise to celebrate his return to school after ten months in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. When we said good-bye, I promised Mike I would keep in touch, and that I would try my best to get a cruise donated to the trust fund his family had set up to cover the cost of his prosthetic limbs.

In 1998, he took his first steps with his new prosthetic leg. Unfortunately, right before his last quarter of school, Mike developed bone spurs from his new leg. Just weeks before his graduation, he was refitted with another leg and had to learn how to walk all over again. Despite all his obstacles, Mike still managed a 4.0 GPA!

Less than two years after meeting Mike on that Alaskan cruise, I was traveling from Chicago to Riverside, California, for Mike’s graduation.
