From Chicken Soup for the Soul Daily Inspirations for Women

April 11

Nothing could have prepared me for the rugged terrain of Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia.

I had arrived in Santiago as planned to meet my 73-year-old husband, Larry, who had been backpacking on his own through the park. But Larry didn’t show up.

Park rangers began a search, and a month later, Larry’s body was found.

Because I wanted to get a sense of what my husband was feeling before he died, I made arrangements for a seven-day trek with two guides. After ascending cliffs, descending over rocks, and fighting through mud and vines, we arrived at the spot where Larry’s body was found.

I created a makeshift marker out of some stones and sat in silence. Soon my tears weren’t of sadness but of joy in celebration of the wonderful life we had together. From Larry, I had learned to persevere in difficult circumstances and to accept the challenges with a sense of humor and always with a strong sense of adventure. This journey was a summation of Larry’s life spent tirelessly in pursuit of challenges, both intellectually and physically. These seven days and 70 miles were a tribute to his boundless spirit.
