From Chicken Soup for the Soul Daily Inspirations for Women

May 3

I had just launched my freelance writing career after working as a political reporter. My mission was to write publishable articles that would find their way into the hearts of magazine editors.

Then the obsession took hold. I was determined to be published in Los Angeles Magazine. So, beginner that I was, I marched into the office and asked to see the editor! Nothing doing.

I returned a week later. Still no luck. Now the obsession really took hold, and a wonderful, kooky idea took form. I’d make my friends buy subscriptions to the magazine. So, two days later, armed with 25 checks and my newspaper clips, I marched into the magazine offices. The editor was curious enough to want to meet this obsessed writer, and I left with an assignment.

So, the obsession paid off, and I realized very early in my career that creative marketing and persistence are as important as writing talent.
