MAY 25

From Chicken Soup for the Soul Daily Inspirations for Women

May 25

At the age of 55, I became an “overnight” success. My first novel, Power of One, was sold for a million dollars and printed in 11 languages. I had written seriously every day of my life since the age of 11. Instead of being an overnight success, I was, in effect, a pathetically slow learner.

But I got there in the end because I learned that writing is about time and practice. It is about time spent with words until eventually they become your friends and begin to cooperate with your gifted storyteller’s mind. Until you have written at least three hours a day, or 15 hours a working week, you will not sufficiently master the craft of words to be effective as a writer.

And the single most important ingredient in becoming a published author? Bum glue. Glue your bum to a chair and keep going, and never give up.

Bryce Courtenay

Success is about being the most determined,
about hanging on the longest
and never giving up.
