From Chicken Soup for the Soul Daily Inspirations for Women

June 7

When my husband, Allen, called to tell me that finally a baby might be available for us to adopt, we wasted no time filling out the applications and telling the birth mother why we would make good parents. Several weeks went by with no word, and then months, and I pondered what might have been. In December I received an unexpected phone call from the attorney handling the case.“The girl is back in town, and she has selected you and Allen.” And so the countdown began.

Little by little I began to think like a mother. Our request for a family health history from the birth mother led to a series of notes between us that eventually shifted away from discussions of health. And, oddly enough, this stranger turned into a friend.

Falling in love with our baby girl came naturally, but when Allen and I decided to adopt, I did not expect to feel love for a stranger. In the hospital’s gift bag, I saw the final letter from my friend. Her love-filled note ended, “I gave her life, now you give her love.”
