From Chicken Soup for the Soul Daily Inspirations for Women

August 7

When my nine-year-old son saw his baby-sitter kissing her boyfriend, he wanted to know, “What’s so great about all this kissing and love stuff?”

I decided to tell my son that first kisses and first loves have to be experienced to be understood. I explained that the symptoms were like coming down with the flu.

He seemed satisfied with that answer, and I forgot about our heart-to-heart until yesterday when my now 14-year-old came home with a slightly glazed look in his eye and a sappy grin on his face. I asked him if he was feeling okay. As he breezed past me on his way to the fridge, he said,“I hate to admit it, Mom, but you were right. It does feel like the flu. But don’t worry, it’s probably only a twenty-four-hour bug, and I’ll be fine by tomorrow.” I asked him how he could be so sure. “Oh, that’s easy,” he said.“She’s not enough like you to make me really sick.”
