From Chicken Soup for the Soul Daily Inspirations for Women

August 20

On Kara’s twenty-sixth birthday we ran the Race for the Cure, an annual fundraiser for breast cancer. Kara and I had practiced staying together by holding a bungee chord between us because crowds frighten my Seeing Eye dog.

“On your mark! Get set! Go!” yells the starter. Finally, slowly, we begin to move. Soon, we are having fun. We’re proud of ourselves, not only because we pass the walkers, but we’re now up with the runners. I hear my friend Eve cheering us on from the sidelines.

We cross the finish line and slow to a walk. We settle on the grass as survivors tell their stories. It is one of the most moving and touching experiences we will ever share, not just as mother and daughter, but as two women.

The bungee chord lies between us in the grass, but its meaning will continue to give me strength and courage. Connection is what it’s all about, one child to her mother, one woman to another.
