From Chicken Soup for the Soul Daily Inspirations for Women

October 18

In our kindergarten class, we constantly encouraged children to recognize and accept strengths in themselves and others. One of our strongest class rules was,“We will say only kind things to each other.”

One day the children were seated on the floor eagerly relating experiences about springtime when Michael raised his hand, as he often did. But Michael couldn’t speak. I recognized him each time he raised his hand and gave him time to respond. After a few minutes, I would respond as if he had.“Michael, that was a good try.”

When Michael raised his hand again this day, to our great surprise, he spoke! The energy in the room was overwhelming. One of my class angels, Nicole, spoke first, “That was a great wrong answer!” The class immediately stood and gave him a standing ovation.
