There are four skills that any true traveler must master: patience, tolerance, respect and a sense of humor.

I was in Bhubaneshwar, in the eastern state of Orissa, India, and had just spent the afternoon scrambling around the ruins of a thirteenth-century Surya temple. It was hot and dusty. All I wanted was a sealed, safe bottle of cold water.

We pulled up to the hotel grounds, and I went to the desk and asked for a bottle of water.

“Please to go to your room, Ma’am. It will be delivered.”

Knowing that the kitchen was just behind the desk, I pleaded with the man.

“Yes, Ma’am, it will be delivered shortly,” he responded with a smile.

Exasperated, I slumped off to my room and stewed until there was a knock at my door.

And there before me stood three men balancing a refrigerator, inside of which was one bottle of ice-cold water.
