From Chicken Soup for the Soul Daily Inspirations for Women

December 4

At the end of her shift, Lois, a surgical and intensive care nurse for 30 years, was eager to go home to a hot bath and a novel. Instead, she wound up climbing into an ambulance and accompanying the paramedics to the scene of a two-car accident.

Lois attended to the woman in one of the vehicles. Hoping to comfort the woman, she said, “Looks like you’re gong to be fine, but just to be on the safe side, we’ll take you in.” Mutely, the woman stared at Lois with vacant eyes. En route to the hospital, Lois held the patient’s hands and comforted her.

The following morning Lois checked on the accident victim. The patient blinked her eyes.“Are you real, or are you an angel?”

Lois smiled. “Nurses are often referred to as angels of mercy.”

The woman shook her head. “Last night, I was in an accident and thought I might die. An angel appeared, and when she touched me, I felt a surge of love and knew she had been sent to reassure me that I would live. You look and sound exactly like her, except you don’t have wings.”
