From Chicken Soup for the Soul Daily Inspirations for Women

December 14

Call it any old psychobabble thing you want, whatever it was, the fact remained that I was not my usual cheerful self from the end of January until mid-March.

One day after a job interview, I stopped at my friend Sharon’s house for tea. As I was leaving, Sharon noticed I was missing a button on the belt of my coat. “Hey,” she said,“there’s an extra button inside. I’ll sew it on for you right now.”

The gift of Sharon’s time, when I was at such a low state, meant more to me than if someone had given me a sweepstakes check.

When I got home there was a silly greeting card from another friend.“I’ve got a hug here with your name on it.”

A few days later, my Texas coauthor sent me a “sunshine box” filled with chocolates, red silk tulips and ginger-lily bath gel.

Before I knew it, I understood one of the most amazing, most profound aspects of life: The world and its people are designed in such a way that no matter how big our problems, the smallest gesture given in love from a friend can become the biggest miracle of all.
