9: Who Am I?

9: Who Am I?

From Chicken Soup for the Soul: Recovering from Traumatic Brain Injuries

Who Am I?

Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.

~Henry David Thoreau

There was a time

When I was not like this

But now the tables have turned

And now I am not sure

Who I am

Or what I have become

Especially since now

I am not who I used to be

Communication breakdown

Can’t seem to find the words

Or understand when spoken to

Anger—Confusion—Frustration—Depression

It’s sometimes a desperate and overwhelming situation

Feeling lost in so much confusion

And losing my confidence

In what I say or do

And although I have

A natural instinct to survive

Just hear my cries

For right now I just need

Friendship and understanding

Not false promises or lies

So please don’t walk out

And slam the door on me

For the memories of my past

Will always remind me

Of who I once used to be

But I have the ambition and drive

And I will find the means to survive

For I will be

Who I want to be
