8: A Tiger Sleeps

8: A Tiger Sleeps

From Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Cat Did What?

A Tiger Sleeps

God made the cat in order that humankind might have the pleasure of caressing the tiger.

~Fernand Mery

A tiger sleeps inside our cat

where he sits, purring, washing paws;

jelly-bean pads so soft and flat

concealing predatory claws.

He hunts our antique catcher’s mitt,

he hunts the pillows, hunts the sheets;

and when he was a naughty kit

he’d hunt unwary toes and feet.

He prowls about in feral form,

attacks toys with a savage joy

but always comes back, sweet and warm,

and is once more my loving boy.

A tiger sleeps inside our cat.

In feline dreams he’ll roar and leap

— he’s really on a fluffy mat:

tiny, cute and fast asleep.
