From Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Cat Did What?

Left Behind

Cats are absolute individuals, with their own ideas about everything, including the people they own.

~John Dingman

Our cats were always outside cats. When we moved, which was often, we usually kept our cats in the house a few days until they got used to living in the new place. One cat, however, decided he preferred the old neighborhood. No matter how many times we moved him, as soon as we let him outside he returned to the old home. Finally the neighbors at the former residence said, “Let him stay. We’ll feed him with our cats.”

Lily, a calico cat, always sensed when a move was starting. She would dash into the house and curl up in a moving box to make sure she went with our family. One time we moved a mere block away. At that time Lily was busy with a litter of five newborn kittens so she did not leave them to jump into a moving box. We finished moving late in the evening and decided that Lily and her family would be fine until the next morning. We would then move her and the kittens and keep them in the house until they adjusted to the new place.

That night, as we scrambled through boxes in the kitchen trying to fix dinner, we heard scratching and meowing at the back door. We opened the door to find Lily with a kitten in her mouth. She was making sure that she and her family were not left behind.
