5 tips to help women find the "divine" in every day

Inspired by Chicken Soup for the Soul: Devotional Stories for Women

By Susan M. Heim and Karen Talcott

Whether you are having the ride of your life, or can’t wait for the current ride to be over, we all need God’s guidance to lead us in the right direction. What better way to jumpstart your road-to-devotion than prayers and stories from women for women? The following tips were inspired by Chicken Soup for the Soul: Devotional Stories for Women to inspire you to break out of the daily grind and find the daily divine.

1. Make God part of your everyday life, not just emergencies. We naturally call upon God for guidance and answers, but we should remember to ask Him for help even in the smallest of situations. One day at Bible study, Elizabeth Fenn was listening to other women talk about divorce and illness; she felt she had nothing to share because she only had crying kids and tantrums on her mind. Her group reminded her that the "mountain" of parenting was just as important as the issues they were facing. "We often forget to call upon the Lord to help us get through the day. It was a wake-up call for me to remember that I don’t have to be going through a major life crisis to ask the Lord for strength and perseverance in the everyday, mundane things."

2. Start your day with prayer, and you’ll always know where you are going. Use prayer to center yourself; it gives you the encouragement and the drive to make it through the day. Christina Harris’ dying grandfather told her, "Don’t live life without living it." The message stuck, and she lives every day for God. She prays, "Remind us each day to live it for you. When we center it on you, all things are possible." If you don’t know where you’re going today, ask God to lead you down the path. You might be surprised where He will take you!

3. Use your child’s fascination with God as a way to strengthen your own faith. Besides being the best gift from God, children’s unique perspectives on life can help you see things in a new way. Deborah Kaufman was caught up in her routine when her 5-year-old pointed out that the trees were "dancing;" she hadn’t even noticed. As Deborah shares, "It took a young child to remind me that I need to stop and enjoy the wonder of my relationship with God and His creation."

4. Always listen for God. God speaks to everyone, wherever they are in their lives. Listen with your ears, your head and your heart, as He may be trying to tell you something. Kim Leonard was awaiting chemotherapy when she noticed a husband helping his wife, who was very ill. As a way to reach out, she made them dinner one night. Kim’s challenge to us all? "‘Are you listening?’ All around us, men and women need an extra hug, dinner, prayer or encouragement. Take time out of your busy schedule to ask God how you can do His work. He will show you the way." And He will never lead you astray.

5. No matter what we think or feel, we are never alone. Women have always had at least two support groups to help them through anything: their girlfriends and their faith. There is an undeniable connection between women. Your girlfriends understand how and why you feel the way you do. And while girlfriends are only a phone call away, we can always call on God through prayer. Tracy Powell prays to God, "Help me to remember the beautiful woman I am, the lovely friends I have, and the wonders of nature that enlighten my soul. These things remind me that you have given us a tremendous gift – life!"
